Doug Shows

NCAA Men’s College Basketball Referee
Atlanta, Georgia

Building a career around trust requires patience, repetition, and a willingness to be accountable over time. Doug Shows has spent decades working in professional environments where preparation and steady judgment are expected every day. From athletic competition to financial planning and mediation, his work has consistently involved situations where decisions carry real consequences. Rather than relying on shortcuts, he has focused on discipline, structure, and clear thinking. These principles have guided him across multiple roles, allowing him to serve individuals and families throughout the Atlanta area for more than twenty years. Doug began officiating NCAA Division I men’s basketball in 1993. Entering the profession at that level required commitment to learning and adaptability under constant evaluation. Through consistent preparation and dependable performance, he earned his first NCAA Tournament assignment in 1998. Over time, his officiating career expanded across the country. He worked games in major conferences and was repeatedly selected for conference tournaments and postseason play. His experience includes several Final Four and Championship games, as well as international officiating assignments in more than twelve countries. Each assignment reflected years of reliable evaluations and the trust placed in him by supervisors overseeing elite competition. Officiating at this level involves far more than rule knowledge. Doug maintained the physical conditioning needed to keep pace with elite athletes and the fast tempo of high-level games. He learned how to manage disagreement calmly, accept criticism without losing focus, and make decisions with limited information and time. Veteran officials played an important role in his development, offering guidance that reinforced professionalism, accountability, and preparation as everyday expectations rather than occasional goals. Doug also dedicated time to helping aspiring officials understand what the profession demands. He shared practical insight on fitness, positioning, preparation, and professional conduct. His guidance was direct and realistic, emphasizing discipline and long-term effort rather than shortcuts. He encouraged younger officials to respect the responsibility tied to advancement and to recognize that trust is earned through consistent performance over many seasons. Beyond basketball, Doug applied the same principles to financial services. As a Financial Advisor and business owner, he works with individuals, families, and business owners seeking retirement planning, financial strategy, and long-term protection. His clients value clear explanations, straightforward recommendations, and efficient service. His work includes retirement planning, life insurance strategies, income protection, accredited-investor alternative investments, financial consulting, and real estate planning and negotiation support. Doug previously served as Vice President in the Investment and Insurance Division at Heritage First Bank. In that role, he gained experience within a structured financial institution while advising clients on planning and protection strategies. This experience strengthened his understanding of institutional finance and allowed him to bring a broader perspective to independent advisory work. He holds multiple securities and insurance licenses, as well as the Certified Senior Advisor (CSA) designation. This designation reflects specialized training focused on the needs of older adults, including retirement, tax, and estate planning. Much of his work centers on helping clients maintain stability and independence as life circumstances change. Doug earned both a Bachelor’s degree and a Master’s degree from the University of Southern Mississippi. He is also certified in General and Domestic Mediation through the Justice Center of Atlanta, where he developed skills centered on listening, structure, and resolution in emotionally challenging situations. Referee Doug Shows continues to represent a professional life shaped by preparation, accountability, and long-term service. Across officiating, financial advising, and mediation, he remains committed to steady judgment and thoughtful decision-making, offering experience grounded in consistency rather than recognition.
