Much like Under The Skin, Arrival, The Fountain, and 2001 A Space Odyssey, High Life is going to require the viewer to infer the central plot from disjointed flash backs along the story line arc, and be comfortable with ambiguity intended to allow each viewer to draw their own conclusions. The pace is slow and dwells frequently on conflicts from which I could only assume the director's motive was to build tension in the viewer to reflect what grows within each character over time (years) as they come to grips with their reality. and the likely outcome of their mission. Even though the story takes place on an interstellar ship on its way to a black hole many light years away from Earth, this is a drama centered on how individuals cope with circumstances beyond their control and loneliness. The cinematography is breathtaking, and its amplified by the black-and-white, 35mm, 1.19:1 aesthetic of the film. Its brilliantly paced; theres not a single dull moment to be found, and tension is constantly rising. And of course, its damn near impossible to praise this film without mentioning the stellar acting. Pattinson is amazing in his own right, but its Defoe who steals the show, and if any performance is going to give him the Oscar he rightfully deserves, its this one. I could sing this masterpieces praises to high heaven for days on end.
