From 1984 to 2006, I reported for small-town weeklies, big-city dailies, and national magazines. Along the way, among the thousands of stories that I wrote, I helped root out local government corruption, wrote a series of investigative stories that culminated in a wrongly convicted man’s freedom from prison, and chronicled a small-town newspaper’s unblinking belief in a tale that would make Forrest Gump blush. My work has appeared in scores of publications, including Time, USA Today and the Chicago Tribune. From 2000 to 2004, I was a stringer for Time's Chicago bureau and worked on more than 80 stories. For a six-year period, I was one of the most prolific reporters for the Tribune.
